Welcome!

My name is Grace Cox, and I am so glad you’re here! The journey of music has been a lifelong one for me. I grew up learning piano and violin from the age of five…

🎹 "Meet the Instruments" 🎻 ages 3-6 | Cost: $20

Next date: TBD
Cost: $20 ($10 discount available for bringing a friend/sibling!)

Perhaps your little one has seen the piano or violin being played on TV or on stage. Maybe they’ve expressed some interest in learning how to play, or have found ways to experiment on a real or pretend instrument. This age is such a wonderful time to explore and create, and I love entering in to the excitement and wonder that each child brings!

Here’s what we’ll be doing during this fun and exploratory 60-minute event:

  • Listening to the sounds of piano and violin up close

  • Exploring how sound is made on each instrument

  • Moving to music to connect sound with our bodies

  • Trying out simple rhythm and tonal patterns through play

  • Getting a chance to touch and try the instruments

  • Singing and echoing short musical phrases

  • Observing others and soaking in the musical environment at each student’s own pace

  • That’s totally fine. Children are welcome to participate at their own pace. Some may observe for a while before joining in—this is part of the learning process.

  • Nope! This event includes movement-based activities, short attention-span pacing, and opportunities to get up and explore. We understand that young children are learning through motion.

  • I aim for a flexible, adaptive environment. Let us know on the registration form if your child would benefit from any accommodations, and I’ll do my best to meet their needs!

  • Children in this age group might have a hard time with one-on-one “formal instruction”, but thankfully there’s another way! I’ll be offering small group violin and piano instruction for ages 3-6 in the fall, in groups of 3-4 students, using a play-based approach to surround them with music and lay the foundations for true musical understanding! From there, they will be ready to dive deeper into whatever instrument they choose to study.

🎹 "Piano Party" 🎹 ages 6-12 | Cost: $30

Next date: TBD
Cost: $30 ($10 discount available for bringing a friend/sibling!)

Perhaps your child has expressed interest in the piano. Maybe they go to a piano and create their own music and sounds. Or maybe they’ve taken lessons and made strides in their learning, and you want to keep them connected to music while they’re out of school. Whichever the case, I’d love to have them join us for a “Piano Party” this summer!

Here’s what we’ll be doing during this interactive and creative 90-minute event:

  • Playing with rhythm patterns together to “speak” in music

  • Experimenting with tonal patterns to build internal musical understanding

  • Bringing a playful approach to the piano to keep minds and bodies open to exploration

  • Creating/playing multi-part music that every ability level can access

  • Talking about the learning process for piano

  • Moving to music to connect physical feeling with musical sound

  • Exploring written notation through the concrete “note parts” that make up music

  • Not at all. These events are designed to be accessible for brand-new students and welcoming for those just starting out.

  • Wonderful! Students with experience will have opportunities to lead group activities and will likely discover new ways of engaging with their instrument through exploration, creativity, and improvisation.

  • Parents are absolutely welcome to stay and observe. If your student is 8 or older, drop-off is fine too—whatever works best for your family.

  • That’s completely okay. Students are welcome to observe quietly for as long as they need. There’s a lot to learn just by watching and listening.

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to play the piano or violin. Maybe you’ve given it a try, but would like some guidance to know you’re headed in the right direction. Or perhaps you’ve been playing one of these instruments for awhile and want a chance to play and learn with others!

Here’s what we’ll be doing during this 90-minute event:

  • Visiting or revisiting the basic technical foundations so that you know how your movement connects to the sound

  • Understanding how your body mechanics work with the instrument for balanced, sustainable playing

  • Experimenting with rhythm and tonal patterns as building blocks for improvisation

  • Bringing a playful approach to the instrument to keep our minds and bodies open to exploration

  • Creating/playing multi-part music that every ability level can access

  • Talking about the learning process for each instrument

  • Exploring “playing by ear” and “sight-reading” to understand how both play a part in our musical journey

  • Not at all. These events are designed to be accessible for brand-new students and welcoming for those just starting out.

  • We’ll explore through the lens of folk and classical music, with plenty of room for you to improvise your own ideas and discoveries.

  • Yes, please bring your own violin if you have one. If not, you’ll be able to let me know on the registration form, and I’ll have one ready for you. If piano is what you’re interested in, no need to worry about this at all!

  • It’s an interactive experience. You’ll be moving, listening, and playing for about half of the time. The other half includes learning, conversation, and exploration. You do not have to play solo unless you want to!

  • I’ll shape this workshop for the specific participants registered! You’ll be able to let me know your goals on the registration form.

General FAQs

  • Participants will gain/build on foundational knowledge about the instrument, and will learn how to improvise musical ideas. One session won’t be enough to build the technical foundations for a broad range of repertoire, nor will it predict a long-term relationship with the instrument. But in the same way that a trip to the pet store won’t teach you everything about owning a pet—yet gives you a glimpse of different animals and their energy—this will help you get in the same space as music-making and learning. And that’s a very good place to start!

  • This might be a refreshing change of pace. I approach music learning through a mix of movement, listening, improvisation, and technique—designed to fuel exploration and progress at each student’s pace. Whether your previous experience felt too rigid, too fast, too slow, or just not quite right, this is a chance to reconnect with music in a new way.

  • No, they are just a description of the target age range for the event. If you’d like to participate in an event with a different target age range, please feel free!

  • That’s the plan! Please still click here for the registration form, where you can weigh in on possible upcoming dates!

  • Yes! Whether you have a student interested in multiple instruments, students in different age ranges, or just want to be a part of every event, please come! The group dynamics and activities shift each time and each event will be a unique learning experience.

  • I understand - life happens! The registration fee is non-refundable, however, if you let me know ahead of the event, I would be happy to apply your registration fee as a credit towards another summer event or lessons in the fall.
